"And I Woke Up..."

Atlanta quintet Deerhunter dropped their sophomore LP, "Cryptograms," earlier this week on fish.cloud's favorite label: Kranky! Having heard great things about the group's live show (Karen O. is quoted as having described it as a "religious experience), we were quite excited. Oddly enough, the album actually managed to live up to the towering hype that it was precariously perched upon, dare I say even exceeding it. Marrying the organic pastoral droning of label mates like James Plotkin or Labradford with a more straight ahead jam out sound akin to a marriage between Joy Division's manic drive and My Bloody Valentine's stoned shoegaze - all filtered through the sun kissed pop of Elephant 6, of course - Deerhunter may sound like an unholy amalgam of your favorite records...but they pull it off so, so well. "Cryptograms" plays as a nearly unbroken song cycle, with dreamy ambient interludes melting into driving acid rock and ebullient pop, et al., so posting a couple tracks doesn't quite do it justice; although, they really do help to peak the ol' curiosity. If y'all dig, head over to Darla, because I hear she has a present for you...
